Shaken, Stirred, and Slightly Moist: Behind the Bar Where Frog Memes Became Cocktails

There comes a moment in every meme publication's life when you ask yourself the big questions. Not 'is this frog load-bearing for group chat communication?' — we answered that years ago (yes). We mean the real question: what does a Sad Frog taste like?
So we did what any serious editorial operation would do. We booked two hours at a friend-of-the-site's cocktail bar in Bushwick, handed mixologist Dana Reyes a printout of our most beloved frog meme genres, and told her to go feral. What follows is the menu, the lore, and the hangover.
The Sad Frog Spritz
The meme: The original 2008 sad frog, the one whose captioned despair ('feels bad, man') became the internet's emotional support animal. This frog has been there when no one else was.
The drink: Aperol, dry prosecco, a splash of grapefruit soda, and — per Dana's insistence — 'a brine-washed olive that has also known pain.'
Tasting notes: Bright and bittersweet, like texting 'lol I'm fine' from a wedding you weren't invited to. The olive is the emotional payoff. Do not skip the olive.
The Smug Frog Old Fashioned
The meme: Smug Pepe, chin up, eyes half-lidded, radiating the energy of someone who just got away with something. The patron saint of 'and I'd do it again.'
The drink: Rye whiskey, demerara syrup, Angostura bitters, stirred over one large ice cube, finished with a lemon twist cut unnecessarily thick because smugness is a garnish.
Tasting notes: Classic, self-satisfied, impossible to argue with. Dana describes it as 'a drink that knows it's the best drink on the menu.' Our tasting panel (three editors, one intern who was legally required to be there) agreed it was the strongest pour of the day.
The Feels Good Man Fizz
The meme: The redemption arc. Happy Pepe, the counterpart, the exhale, the frog for when the group chat finally gets good news at 1 a.m.
The drink: Gin, elderflower liqueur, fresh lemon, topped with soda and a mint sprig slapped with genuine aggression.
Tasting notes: Effervescent relief. It tastes like the exact second a friend texts 'never mind, it's fine' after forty minutes of silence.
The Deep-Fried Espresso Martini
The meme: The deep-fried frog genre — compressed, oversaturated, artifact-drenched frogs that have been re-saved so many times they've achieved a kind of digital patina. Art, honestly.
The drink: A standard espresso martini, except Dana torched the sugar rim until it was, in her words, 'visibly degraded.' It should look slightly wrong. That's the point.
Tasting notes: Delicious, chaotic, and the only drink on the menu that our photographer refused to shoot without a warning.
The Swamp Water (Group Effort)
The meme: The collective frog — the one posted in unison when the whole chat agrees on something for once.
The drink: We're not printing this recipe. Every ingredient was chosen by a different person, it's green, it shouldn't work, and it absolutely does. Ask your group chat to make one. That's the recipe.
Last Call
Dana's verdict after service: 'These frogs have range.' Our verdict: meme culture has always been about taking the absurd seriously, and there is nothing more serious than a properly built cocktail named after a cartoon amphibian's emotional journey.
Drink responsibly. Post irresponsibly.
